Lets jump in…. I found a recipe for a Pumpkin Spice Latte drink concoction today and haphazardly tried to re-create it using vegan substitutes. Well, the recipe called for brown sugar, and I thought, what the heck, I can use my new Coconut Sugar!
I still drank it despite the funky flavor, but now I atleast can provide a personal review on initial taste:
– Fast facts: Coconut Palm Sugar, made by Navitas Naturals, certified Organic, product of Indonesia, advertised as a super food as a “1:1 Alternative to Cane Sugar”, free of preservatives, paid $5.99 (USA)
–Benefits: On the bag “healthy alternative sweetener that has a lower glycemic index than cane sugar, agave, or honey. Organic evaporated coconut sugar is especially high in minerals including potassium, magnesium, and zinc, as well as vitamins B2, B3, and B6.”
– Tasting Notes: Definitely has a granular brown sugar-like texture, the smell is of a super intensely rich, earthy caramel (the smell hits you as soon as you open the pouch). The taste on its own is sweet but in a Halloween candy corn sort of way (not bad, just intense). In my opinion, cane sugar is sweeter but this definitely wins the complexity category (faint coconut hint). No discernible weird aftertaste. I mean, its hard to compare to the other natural sweeteners out there (i.e. stevia, agave, etc.)…its just so unique!
– Bottomline: I probably won’t try this again in coffee or another cold/hot beverage that relies on a sugar texture/taste. I think it would totally punch up a chocolate baked good recipe (like brownies…mmmmmm). I’ll try again except using it in lieu of sugar in a baking recipe and keep you updated on my thoughts. But if you’re in the market for a earthy sugar with huge vitamin benefits, definitely would give this a try. (RATING — 6 out of 10 Coconuts)
